Youth Science Initiative Coordinator

The EMW Youth Science Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Youth Science Initiative (YSI), a fast-growing program dedicated to cultivating science education for local Boston/Cambridge youth. These youth (ages 9-12) often come from underrepresented backgrounds in science and, through YSI, have the opportunity to interface with our city's vibrant scientific community. In the past, YSI sessions have been held in collaboration with Ginkgo Bioworks, the MIT Media Lab, and NASA.

  • Build networks with local educators and other youth development workers to identify and engage youth potentially interested in joining the next YSI cohort.

  • Identify community partners willing to participate as YSI collaborators.

  • Organize logistics regarding venue space, food needs, transportation, and potential sponsorships for YSI sessions.

  • Plan YSI session curricula in collaboration with community scientists and program leads.

  • Connect with volunteers who will attend YSI sessions and act as mentors for YSI youth participants.

  • Work with design, communication, and video teams to produce relevant digital media related to YSI.

  • Carry out administrative tasks such as drafting waivers and filing documents related to YSI.

  • Be a strong advocate for YSI youth participants and work to ensure collaborators are knowledgeable about our goals in cultivating greater representation in the field.

  • Passion for science education and social justice.

  • Excellent communication skills, organized and collaborative.

  • Able to attend weekly meetings and varied check-ins with other YSI team members.

  • Some familiarity with local Boston/Cambridge science community is preferred.

  • Previous experience with program coordination and science education is preferred.
